U18s v Prestwick - Scottish Cup, 28th July

A classy 95 by Tosh, well supported by wee Al (27 not out), saw us post a formidable total of 151-2 in what was a tough first tie draw v Prestwick. Tosh fell to a well taken caught and bowled when a century was for the taking. In reply, opening bowlers Dean Kennedy and Sean Friel bowled a decent line and length; first frustrating and then dismissing the Prestwick top order. Nadia supported well as change taking a couple of quick wickets to leave Prestwick reeling at 58-5. A loss of concentration on our part and some good, positive hitting by the Prestwick middle order saw them restore some pride finishing on 130-5 giving the Feegie U18s a well deserved win and passage into the next round!

U18s v Uddingston - League, 2nd August

On a damp, rain affected wicket some good opening bowling by Uddingston saw the Feegie top order struggle. Once again only wee Al stood firm making a well constructed 18 before giving a caught and bowled to a delivery that stopped and lifted slightly. The lower middle order of first Nadia and Lorna and then Deep and Sean added over 50 for the last 3 wkts for us to be all out on the last ball for 113 - a decent score but achievable target. In response, Uddingston batted weakly, unable to cope by some very consistent and largely accurate bowling, backed by an excellent effort in the field. Wickets were shared in dismissing Uddingston for 44, with Sean (Friel), Deep and Nadia taking two apiece to complete good all-round performances.

Match Report – U18 First Division, Greenock v Ferguslie – 7th June 2010

Under thunderous skies, the Feegie U18s duly completed a comprehensive win over Greenock in the season’s first league fixture.

Batting first on a rain affected wicket, Michael English and Harry Mapplebeck took advantage of some short-pitched bowling, hitting the ball crisply off the back foot to get the innings off to a flying start. When Michael was out prematurely for 38, caught at deep square leg, Greenock had at last begun to find a fuller length and it was important that an established batsman occupied the crease for the whole 20 overs  in order to post a substantial score. This Harry did, most ably supported by Al Preston-Jones who timed the ball sweetly in his short innings, as well as running intelligently and with urgency between the wickets. Harry was finally out in the last over for a well-played 56 in a total of 147 for 5.

In the field, Sean Friel and Dean Kennedy bowled a much more disciplined length and line, both with decent rhythm and pace which exploited the sometimes alarming lift from a drying wicket. In response, the Greenock batsman were never allowed to apply themselves, succumbing to a variety of weak shots that only lifted the ball to waiting fielders in the infield. Mention also to Lorna Jack who kept well on this drying pitch.  With rain threatening to deny Feegie a deserved victory, the captain turned to Priyatosh to mop up the tail. This he did in 11 deliveries, taking 4 wickets for 1 run to dismiss the home side for 47.  A good performance albeit against a young and relatively weak Greenock side but one that should give the team confidence for games ahead. Well played all!!

U18 Match Report – Ferguslie v West of Scotland, Frank Smith Trophy First Round

In their maiden fixture of the 2010 season, the U18s faced a tough opening round fixture v West of Scotland. In winning the toss and electing to field, it was important to contain West’s experienced and aggressive opening pair however, loose bowling and at times ill-disciplined fielding, allowed both batsman to first get set and then dominate.  A total of 24 wides and no balls boosted the final total and gave the opposition and extra 15 balls off which to score,  resulting in a final total of 177 from the allotted 20 overs.

To meet this challenge, we were going to have to be at our best and despite the early loss of Stubie, Josh and the overseas amateur, Priyatosh Paramanik ‘Tosh’, threatened to challenge the total until Josh played across a straight delivery from Gavin Main to be bowled for 34. Tosh continued to a well deserved half century, well supported by Michael English but when they both fell for 64 and 15 respectively, the run rate made it hard for the lower order and a final total of 150 was a gallant effort.

The worst point of the evening however, occurred at the start of the Feegie innings when Gregor turned awkwardly whilst running between the wickets and was forced to retire hurt.  The injury was as bad as initially feared and he has  fractured his leg just above the ankle – an injury likely to keep him out of the game for several weeks. He will be badly missed in both U18 and senior cricket but has the best wishes from us all, for a full and speedy recovery.

U15 Match Report

Greenock 75 all out lost Ferguslie 113 for 8

Travelling to Glenpark with 9 men, the idea was not to win with the fewest number of players. But there was a game plan, there was a realisation that everybody had to step up and deliver and there was an  inspirational "Walter Smith" team talk. Win the toss, bat and amass an unsurpassable total... didn’t actually work out that way.

Michael English (22) and Stuart Darroch (16) appeared to be heading this way but in the first over of 1st change bowler J. Samuels (2 for 22) both had surrendered their wicket. Without in form Alistair Preston-Jones, Hamza Tahir (28) and Roddy McCrea (18no) made their mark on the game and ensured Ferguslie reached a defendable target. Reece Armstrong the pick of Greenock's bowlers had a triple wicket maiden in the last over, so the ascendancy was definitely with the home side.

Michael and Stuart also opened the bowling and it was Darroch who with good pace and control looked like getting a wicket every ball. His complete spell was wicketless but importantly had set the standard. Although early wickets were few, the Greenock batsmen had already lost ground on the run rate and were fighting an uphill battle. It was Dean Kennedy's spell 5 for 17 that sealed the Greenock fate. In the middle over's he ripped through the heart of the Greenock's batting line. Michael English 4 for 11 mopping up the rest.

U15 Scottish Cup Match Report

Ferguslie 120 for 3 beat Poloc 119 all out

First round match, Poloc won the toss and batted. The early exchanges went to Poloc. A good wicket, short boundaries, some erratic bowling and punishing batting
S.Saleem (51 retired) imposed himself and was ably supported by R. Armour (16). However as per the rules of the contest, like them or not, Saleem's retiral  hit Poloc hard and seizing this opportunity the home side wrestled back the ascendancy. Michael English bowled well and finished 4 for 18.

Michael English (52 retired)  and Stuart Darroch confidently got the run chase off to a good start, but the demise of Stubie and the quick wicket of Dean Kennedy, the pressure was on the last recognised batting pair. Alistair Preston-Jones entered and with some assuredness and discipline, both build the partnership to a score within site of the finishing post. Michael English had to retire. Alistair kept his cool and saw the side home with plenty to spare.

Friday 7th May Game 2
Ferguslie U15  65 All Out lost to West of Scotland 156-7

Ferguslie were convincingly beaten by  the boys from Hamilton Crescent.
Electing to bat West's strong top order A. Umeed (38)  & N Madju (56) targeted our bowlers and plundered there way to a challenging 156 in their 20 over. Only the up and coming slow left arm bowling of Humza Tahir 4-0-3-25 came out with any plaudit.

After the soft run out dismissal of Captain Michael English, the challenge was obviously too much. Alistair Preston Jones top scored with 22 with I.Wheel 4 for 17 and A.Umeed 3 for 11 taking the honours with the ball.
